While liquid alts ETFs first gained popularity among individual investors who lacked access to the illiquid alternatives utilized by institutional investors and the ultra-wealthy, alternative ETFs are now becoming more popular with institutions and the advisors to wealthy clients. In this InvestmentNews video, Axel Merk, president and chief investment officer of Merk Investments, defines alternatives as “instruments that provide low correlation,” and says that investors should generally have around 20% alts exposure in their portfolios. Mr. Merk also says that now is a good time to rebalance your portfolio to hedge against the volatility sure to accompany the coming and inevitable rise of interest rates.
