EquiLibre Technologies is founded by the authors of DeepStack (the first AI to beat professional players in no-limit poker).

The majority of founders at EquiLibre Technologies have worked previously as researchers at DeepMind or IBM, and hold a Ph.D. in math or computer science. Martin Schmid, Rudolf Kadlec and Matej Moravcik also developed DeepStack, the first AI to beat professional players in no-limit poker. Good enough qualifications to launch their ambitious venture to build the next generation of algorithmic trading. (CNBC)

EquiLibre Technologies

The startup, now based in Prague in the Czech Republic, is using game theory and reinforcement learning for developing AI that can pick stocks and cryptos. So instead of playing poker, their algos will test their mettle against financial markets.

Reinforcement learning involves training an AI to achieve a particular goal, such as winning a game of chess or spotting a tumor on a mammogram, by giving it a reward each time it succeeds in doing so.

They will not be reinventing the wheel, so to speak, because according to Schmid, “most of the trading out there is already algorithmic.”

“We just want to do better algorithms than the ones that are already out there,” he added.

What are future plans?

EquiLibre will likely use the finished product at a new hedge fund or sell it to an institution, bank, or other bulge bracket investor.

The startup has already raised venture funding. However, the founders are not revealing the amount except that it was “the largest-ever seed round in the Czech Republic.”
