Charles Schwab’s Anthony Davidow rejects the notion that “smart beta” is little more than a marketing ploy. In this video from InvestmentNews, he says that while not all smart beta products are created equally, as a whole they are “battle-tested, they’ve delivered pretty attractive excess return, and they’ve performed well in virtually all market cycles.” Is now a good time for smart beta? According to Davidow, cap-weighted strategies will tend to outperform during the boom phase of a “boom and bust,” but smart beta takes the emotion out of investing with a rules-based approach. Such a strategy can prevent investors from making poorly timed trades.
