Artificial Intelligence: AI Will Police Offensive Messages On Dating App Tinder
Tinder’s parent company is the Match Group Inc (NASDAQ: MTCH).
Tinder, the global dating app, will deploy Artificial Intelligence (AI) to curb online harassment and offensive messaging on its platform. The new AI-backed feature, dubbed “Are You Sure?” or AYS, will sense if a message is inappropriate or offensive, and display that question as a prompt before the user can hit Send. (News18)
Are You Sure?
Tinder trained their AI algorithm on messages that were reported by members as objectionable, sexual, violent, or otherwise offensive. The program will continue to learn in real-time and become smarter, more accurate at flagging such behavior.
In early testing, Tinder found that AYS? cut offensive testing by over 10%. The tool follows on the heels of an earlier “harm reduction tool” called “Does This Bother You?” The latter provides proactive support to those members who are aggrieved recipients of harmful messages.
Tinder found that AYS? was helping people curb their impulses to let fly their feelings – these members were less likely to be reported for inappropriate messages over the next month.
Does This Bother You? helped members summon up the courage to report hate mail. Reports of inappropriate messages increased 46 percent after the introduction of the tool.
Harassment a no-no on Tinder
“Words are just as powerful as actions, and today we’re taking an even stronger stand that harassment has no place on Tinder,” said Tracey Breeden, Head of Safety and Social Advocacy for Match Group in a statement. “The early results from these features show us that intervention done the right way can be really meaningful in changing behavior and building a community where everyone feels like they can be themselves.”
