Artificial Intelligence: AI-Powered Prosthesis, The “Esper Hand” Nabs Design Award
The AI-powered prosthesis from Esper Bionics is highly dexterous, remarkably light, and very elegant.
The Esper Hand has transformed the dreary and medical-gadget appearance of a current day prosthesis into a well-designed, lifestyle and appearance-enhancing device. The AI-powered Hand is three times faster because it picks up signals from individual muscles. The hand is controlled via a non-invasive wearable brain-computer interface together with a cloud-based software solution. At 380g, it is also much lighter than other prosthetic hands. (ZDNet)
The device from Esper Bionics won a ‘Red Dot Award: Best of the Best 2022’ for setting new standards in the design industry.
“The Esper Hand achieves a comprehensive functionality that comes astonishingly close to the natural movement of the hand,” the Red Dot jurors wrote. “Its self-learning technology makes an important contribution to enabling users to carry out everyday tasks independently. Its technically elegant appearance makes the prosthesis a lifestyle product that the user wears with confidence. In addition, the design ensures gender-specific shaping by sensitively addressing anatomical differences.”
Esper Hand: It gets better with learning
The artificial limb also has machine learning capabilities that help it get better, faster and more accurate with use. The Hand is able to identify the most oft-repeated gestures and arm movements of the wearer, learn from this data, and then predict the next intentions or moves.
“In our development process, technology and design play together… Marrying these two makes it possible for us to incorporate the beauty, diversity, and evolution of a human body into designing Esper products,” says Dima Gazda, CEO and co-founder of Esper Bionics.
