Digital Assets: NBA and Meta Extend Collaboration For Basketball In The Metaverse
52 games of the league will be available to be enjoyed using VR (virtual reality) technology.
The NBA has announced an extension of its partnership with Meta to broadcast 52 games using virtual reality technology in the metaverse. The games will be available on Xtadium, a co-viewing platform, and five of them will be presented in a more immersive way on Horizon Worlds, Meta’s flagship metaverse app. This move aims to provide existing fans with a more interactive experience and attract new fans familiar with VR technology to the sport.

In addition to the games, fans will also have the opportunity to purchase NBA-licensed apparel on Meta’s Avatars Store across various apps, including Whatsapp, Instagram, and Facebook.
Meta director of sports media and league partnerships Rob Shaw said: “Meta’s immersive VR technology is opening up new opportunities for sports fans to engage and interact with their favorite NBA teams. Fans will be able to express their fandom by donning their favorite team’s gear on Avatars and enjoy more live NBA games.”
The NBA has been actively exploring new technologies to expand its reach, such as the launch of NBA Top Shots in partnership with Dapper Labs and a partnership with Sorare to create an NFT game.
