Artificial Intelligence: Visitors Queue Up For Astro Readings From A Co-Star Machine In NoLIta
Co – Star is “the astrology app that deciphers the mystery of human relations through NASA data and biting truth.”
The Co-Star machine, developed by a technology company called Co-Star, is attracting attention at the Iconic Magazines store in NoLIta. Resembling a large washing machine with celestial labels and blinking lights, the device allows users to ask questions and receive answers based on astrological calculations.
Visitors, including Tim Wiedmann, intrigued by the machine’s capabilities, often wait in line to use it. Many have discovered the machine through TikTok and are unaware that it employs artificial intelligence (AI), specifically ChatGPT and GPT-3, to generate its astrological forecasts.
Co-Star, known for its astrology app, created the machine as a promotional tool for its new in-app service called Embrace the Void. The machine’s answers are produced by AI using a database of text written by astrologers and poets. (New York Times)
Despite its reliance on AI, Co-Star aims to capture the charm of traditional fortune-telling machines while providing users with unique readings. The founder, Banu Guler, cites various aesthetic influences, such as Soviet-era computers and vending machines.
While some users appreciated the novelty and uniqueness of the machine, others, like Susan Miller, a New York astrologer, expressed skepticism about relying on AI for personal and emotional matters. Nisarga Kadam found the AI-generated answers impersonal, while Anna Jonska believed the machine’s use of AI made it more trustworthy than a human fortune teller.
Overall, the Co-Star machine offers an intriguing blend of astrology, artificial intelligence, and vintage charm, attracting visitors who are curious about its astrological insights and unique experience.
