Digital Assets: UK Data Regulator Will Examine Sam Altman’s WorldCoin
WorldCoin calls itself a digital passport that identifies the person.
The UK’s data regulator, Information Commissioner’s Office, will conduct further enquiries into Worldcoin, a crypto project by OpenAI. Worldcoin offers a digital identification solution by scanning users’ irises to verify their humanity and provides free cryptocurrency.
After the project’s launch, the native coin WLD experienced a significant price rise. Worldcoin aims to expand its operations to 20 countries, but concerns about data privacy, particularly related to the use of eyeball scans, have been raised by global speculators. (Reuters)
“We note the launch of WorldCoin in the U.K. and will be making further enquiries,” a spokesperson for the Information Commissioner’s Office told CoinDesk. Organizations “need to have a clear lawful basis to process personal data. Where they are relying on consent, this needs to be freely given and capable of being withdrawn without detriment.”
The data regulator’s investigation reflects the increasing scrutiny of the project by regulators worldwide. Worldcoin claims to be compliant with data protection regulations, including GDPR.
