Medtronic’s GI Genius Intelligent Endoscopy Module uses artificial intelligence to detect colorectal polyps.

Medtronic has taken a major step forward in the fight against colorectal cancer through intelligent endoscopy. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide, with 1.8 million new cases reported annually. Therefore, Medtronic’s GI Genius module uses artificial intelligence to highlight the presence of pre-cancerous lesions with a visual marker in real-time.

Intelligent endoscopy for early detection

Medtronic’s innovative use of AI in gastroenterology will improve the quality and reliability of colonoscopies. It is, therefore, a good example of the integration of advanced technology inside the day-to-day practice.

In May 2019, Medtronics entered into a Collaboration Agreement with Cosmo Pharmaceuticals to start a research collaboration in Artificial Intelligence in GI to identify various technological solutions and associated business opportunities.

AI-based intelligent endoscopy: manufacture by Cosmo Pharmaceuticals

Cosmo Pharmaceuticals manufactures the AI software and device for this application. Medtronic will bring this technology to the market through a worldwide distribution agreement with Cosmo. However, the GI Genius intelligent endoscopy module does not have FDA clearance. Therefore it is not available for sale in the United States.
