‘What’s Your Poison…Er…Whisky?’ Let AI tell you
If you want a single malt, but don’t know which, an artificial intelligence (AI)-based app will guide you.
Diageo has launched an online service that will help consumers choose their whisky based on answers to 11 questions.
Examples of these questions are, “how often do you eat bananas?” and “how do you feel about chillies?” Based on the consumer’s answers, the app uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to narrow down the possible recommendations from a range of sweet, fruity, spicy and smoky flavors found in single malts whiskies. Diageo then distils it down to a so-called ‘flavor-print’ unique to the consumer, and from there to a specific single malt Diageo whisky.
Diageo harnesses AI to learn about customers’ preferences for whisky
“We’re excited to roll this out at scale and help many thousands of people find their perfect whisky based on the innovative Flavour Print AI technology,” said Andy Parton, senior regional manager for Diageo.
“We are using our extensive consumer knowledge, whisky expertise gathered over hundreds of years and cutting-edge AI to help consumers discover, explore and enjoy Scotch in new and exciting ways,” said Adeline Koay. Adeline is the principal scientist for research & development at Diageo.
Diageo’s app is fine, but the award for the world’s first AI-created whisky goes to…
That credit perhaps goes to Swedish distillery Mackmyra. In May this year, it announced “the world’s first AI-created whisky.” The distillery fed information like its recipes, sales data, and customer preferences into Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform and AI cognitive services. The computer then generated millions of possible and innovative recipes for new whiskies. A human being makes the final choice of the blend. “We believe that the whisky is AI-generated but human-curated,” Mackmyra’s Master Blender Angela D’Orazio stated.
The distillery has released AI-whisky Intelligens, a single malt whisky.
More AI in liquor – Monker’s Garkel Gin
Earlier this month Circumstance Distillery created an AI tool dubbed Ginette. Scientists trained Ginette to analyze thousands of botanicals, gin recipes and learn a database of more than 500 gin names. The result: Monker’s Garkel, a ‘fragranced’ gin – the world’s first AI gin.
