London-based startup Oxia Palus recreated the image using AI.

At the Deeep Ai Art Fair in Shoreditch, East London, hangs a 3-D printed, AI-generated canvas depicting a nude woman painted by Pablo Picasso. The image, now dubbed The Lonesome Crouching Nude, is an AI-rendered work created by Oxia Palus from a work hidden beneath the oil paint of Picasso’s The Blind Man’s Meal (1903). The ghostly nude woman, which had been painted over by Picasso, was originally discovered in 2010 using superimposed X-ray fluorescence (XRF) imaging. (Robb Report)

This London startup uses computers and AI to resurrect long-lost artworks such as The Lonesome Crouching Nude. Picasso likely painted the Nude during the Blue Period or the years 1901 to 1904.

The team at Oxia Palus used XRF imaging and image processing software to create the underlying frame of the painting. Thereafter, AI digitally applied brushstrokes gleaned from Picasso’s works during the same period to give the structure shape and form.

That done, the scientists generated a heightmap and then 3D-printed the image on a canvas to get the look of a genuine oil painting.

“I hope that Picasso would be happy in knowing the treasure he’s hidden for future generations is finally being revealed, 48 years after his death and 118 years after the painting was concealed,” Oxia Palus co-founder George Cann said in a statement to Robb Report.

“I also hope that the woman within the portrait would be happy in knowing that she hadn’t been erased from history and that her beauty was finally being revealed in the 21st century.”
