The doctor need not take any notes. The system compiles a highly accurate clinical note.

Nuance Communications (NASDAQ: NUAN) and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) announced Tuesday the integration of an artificial intelligence-based clinical solution into Microsoft Teams to capture all details of clinical telemedicine via accurate documentation. (Microsoft)

Physicians and doctors can activate the Nuance Dragon Ambient eXperience (DAX) directly from within their Microsoft Teams. The ambient clinical intelligence (ACI) solution securely captures the details of the virtual teleconsultation. It also creates clinical documentation that writes itself.

COVID-19 and physician burnout

Reportedly, since the onset of the COVID 19 pandemic, there has been an estimated 50-to 175-fold increase in telehealth patient volumes. The accelerated virtual consultations and heightened demand for medical care during the crisis have raised worries of physician burnouts.

As a result, the healthcare industry has stepped up improvements in information exchange and integration of technology. This will drive better health outcomes and increased efficiencies.

Conversational AI has proved to be a valuable tool for enhancing telemedicine consultations.

“The dramatic growth of telehealth represents a unique opportunity to use Nuance DAX ambient clinical intelligence technology to transform healthcare experiences and define what healthcare providers and consumers should expect from advanced digital health solutions,” said Diana Nole, executive vice president, and general manager of healthcare, Nuance.

“Our strategic partnership with Microsoft, which led to this rapid integration of Nuance DAX with Microsoft Teams for telehealth, illustrates the ongoing importance of combining our technologies, domain expertise, and market reach to develop advanced cloud-based conversational AI solutions that keep the health of clinicians and patients front and center in healthcare delivery,” she added.

“Through our strategic partnership with Nuance, we are combining the best in Nuance’s conversational AI technology with Microsoft Teams, Azure and Azure AI to accelerate and scale the development and adoption of innovative solutions that emphasize the essential and personal aspect of quality healthcare between a physician and patient,” said Gregory Moore, M.D., Ph.D., corporate vice president, Microsoft Health. “This important milestone and the integration of Microsoft Teams within the Nuance DAX solution will empower front-line care providers to positively transform the patient care experience.”

DAX by Nuance

DAX eliminates the need for the physician to re-enter information. In fact, the system could place an order in the electronic health record (EHR) and send it to the pharmacy.

ACI is a comprehensive, AI-powered, voice-enabled solution that uses ambient sensing technology to securely listen to doctor-patient encounter conversations. It simultaneously offers workflow and knowledge automation to complement the EHR.

Deep-learning-based AI securely converts encounter conversations into standardized, structured notes tailored for each specialty that adhere to established documentation standards. The AI-generated notes go through a brief quality review process to check for accuracy, omissions, and appropriateness. They are then delivered to the clinician for signature in the EHR.
