Artificial Intelligence: Cardiologs’ AI Model Trumps Apple Watch On ECGs
Cardiologs, which uses AI to drive better heart health, tested its AI model against the Apple Watch ECG algorithm in a small clinical trial.
Paris-based Cardiologs, which specializes in AI-enabled cardiology diagnostics, announced Tuesday that a clinical study proved its deep learning AI outperformed the Apple Watch ECG algorithm in the detection of atrial arrhythmias (AA), which are related to stroke risks. (CardiovascularBusiness)
Original Apple Watch companion application (ECG 1.0 App) compared to a proprietary deep neural network (DNN)
A clinical team from the “Institut Cardiovasculaire Paris-Sud” (ICPS) in Paris set out to determine whether the Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) ECG application, while working remotely, was missing significant atrial arrhythmias.
Further, the team wanted to establish if a better, more intelligent algorithm could identify AA more reliably and thereby reduce stroke risk, as well as boost smartwatch performance.
On test: Cardiologs’ proprietary deep neural network (DNN).
The results showed that the DNN improved sensitivity by 34% and resulted in fewer unclassified readings.
“Cardiac monitoring is almost a standard feature of modern wearables like the Apple Watch, but there are still opportunities to improve ECG analysis to get a more accurate diagnosis. It’s exciting to see that our deep learning algorithm can provide a more precise reading, promising many benefits for both patients and healthcare professionals. This advance will no doubt clear the path for the next generation of wearable health technology,” said Cardiologs CEO and Co-Founder Yann Fleureau.
Acquired by Philips
Earlier this month, Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG) acquired Cardiologs for an undisclosed sum.
Philips said the acquisition was an excellent fit with its existing cardiac care portfolio.
