Atwater Brewery in Detroit has created a new beer called Artificial Intelligence IPA, which was formulated using a recipe generated by the chatbot, ChatGPT.

The brewery used ChatGPT to write a home brew scale recipe and then scaled it up to fit their 20 BBL brew system. (Detroit Free Press)

“I asked it to write me an IPA recipe, and it gave me a home brew scale recipe,” said the brewery’s Quality Manager Joe Platt. “So then, I asked it to scale the recipe to 20 BBLs to fit our brew system, which it was able to do.”

The Artificial Intelligence IPA beer is a blend of Centennial, Citra, and Amarillo hops resulting in tropical and citrus flavors and aromas. This is the first beer of its kind, fully generated by AI.

“I can’t wait for everyone to try one of the first Artificial Intelligence designed beers. AI technology has the potential to impact and revolutionize many industries, including the brewing industry, in the future,” said Platt. “We asked an AI to create an IPA recipe for us, and it was able to create a recipe to the scale of our brew system and created an AI-designed-human-brewed IPA. I’m excited for Atwater to be at the forefront of innovative brewing. We have more ideas and new beers coming in the very near future.”

The Artificial Intelligence IPA will be available at Atwater’s Detroit and Grand Rapids locations and to celebrate the release, the brewery will charge $2.001 per pint as an homage to the film “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

Atwater Brewery was founded in 1997 and was sold to Molson Coors in 2020.
