Digital Assets: Environmentalists Demand Non-Renewal Of Air Permit To Crypto Miner Digihost

Digihost operates a crypto mining facility in North Tonawanda.
Environmental advocates in New York are vehemently opposing the renewal of an air permit for a cryptocurrency mining facility in North Tonawanda. They argue that this operation not only threatens the quality of life for local residents but also contradicts the state’s climate goals.
The facility, run by Digihost at the former Fortistar power plant site, has come under fire from environmental law group Earthjustice and concerned citizens. (Bitcoin.com)
Critics of the mining operation claim that it generates excessive noise pollution and poses environmental risks. They are calling on the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and Governor Kathy Hochul to deny the permit renewal, citing the DEC’s previous stance against a similar miner in Yates County due to emissions concerns.
Earthjustice attorney Jessamine De Ocampo pointed out the contradiction in Digihost’s claim to be a part of the climate solution while emitting over 300,000 metric tons of greenhouse gases annually. However, some reports suggest that bitcoin miners can have a positive impact on the grid and convert flare gas into energy for mining.
Local residents have complained about sleepless nights due to the noise, while others worry that the facility will hinder North Tonawanda’s climate initiatives. There’s also concern that biased opinions from politically affiliated environmental groups may be influencing public perception.
Activists are mobilizing a letter-writing campaign to push for the rejection of the air permit renewal, arguing that cryptocurrency mining relies on fossil fuels rather than clean energy, which is essential for meeting climate goals and protecting residents’ well-being under the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.
