Artificial Intelligence: Facebook Dating Will Use Facial Scanning To Detect Underage Users

Digital identity company Yoti will provide one of the age assurance tools, to ensure only adults can access the 18+ experience.

“We’re bringing our age verification tools to Facebook Dating to verify that only adults are using the service, and to continue our efforts in preventing minors from accessing it,” said a blog post Monday by Meta (NASDAQ: META), the parent company of Facebook Dating.

Users would be provided two options to verify their age, one of which is to take a video selfie.

How it works

Meta’s internal age detection technology may sense potential irregularities in the age declared by a user, it may prompt the user to verify their age by either of two means.

They may either upload their ID document, or alternatively, use Yoti’s facial age estimation technology.

Yoti’s facial age estimation solution is able to assess someone’s age from a selfie which is instantly deleted after the estimate is provided to them. It is a secure way for a person to prove their age without revealing their ID document or name.

Facebook introduced age verification on Instagram earlier this year. However, Facebook Dating is the first online dating platform in the US that will apply Yoti’s facial age estimation technology to confirm users’ age.

Julie Dawson, Yoti Chief Policy & Regulatory Officer said, “Daters can have greater confidence in who they are meeting online, and most importantly, young people will be better protected from accessing inappropriate content and experiences.”

Erica Finkle, Meta Director of Data Governance said, “Our age verification tests show that our tools are working to help keep young people within age-appropriate experiences, and we’re proud to partner with Yoti to provide people with simple to use options that respect their privacy.”
