Frore emerged from stealth after spending four years developing its AirJet cooling chip.

Frore Systems is a developer of innovative thermal technology for consumer devices. The company’s active cooling chips, AirJet® Mini and AirJet® Pro, are integrated into devices to remove heat silently, delivering 2X improvement in device processor performance. AirJet’s compact size and unique capability enables faster, quieter, thinner, lighter and dust-proof devices. Frore has emerged from stealth, wrapping up a $100 million round from investors including Mayfield, Addition, Clear Ventures and Qualcomm Ventures. (Crunchbase)

Fans – the nuisance of noise and bulk

“While the latest processors promise higher performance, only 50% or less is realized because the thermal solutions are still the same, old, passive or fan-based systems that are inadequate, noisy, and bulky,” says founder and CEO Seshu Madhavapeddy in a release.

“Thermal is the only aspect of modern-day computing that still uses century-old technology,” Madhavapeddy adds. “In today’s devices, what often determines performance is the capability of the thermal solution and not the sophistication of the processor.”

Borrowing ideas from technology used to cool aircraft engines, Frore’s AirJet generates short, intense blasts of air that target heat, the critical pain point in all computing devices. It also takes up significantly less space than a fan. Notebooks and other consumer devices don’t have space for a fan. As a result, thanks to Airjet, such devices no longer have to lower their processors’ speed to prevent excess heat from building up.

Frore also announced a partnership with Intel Corp (NASDAQ: INTC) to incorporate the AirJet into laptops based on the chipmaker’s Evo technology. Evo is a set of technical standards for high-end laptops that feature Intel processors.

“Engineering thin, light, stylish laptop designs that offer great performance while remaining cool and quiet are foundational to that mission,” said Josh Newman, the vice president and general manager of mobile platforms at Intel. “Frore Systems’ Airjet technology offers a new and novel approach to help achieve these design goals in new ways.”
