The Merchat AI conversational shopping assistant is now available in beta nationwide to shoppers of “previously loved” items.

Mercari, the popular online marketplace in the U.S., has announced the beta launch of Merchat AI, a conversational shopping assistant powered by ChatGPT. This new artificial intelligence tool allows customers to engage in real-time conversations with Merchat AI to receive personalized product recommendations based on their needs. Leveraging the large language model, ChatGPT, Merchat AI scans through the millions of items listed on Mercari’s platform to provide real-time recommendations based on chat prompts.

John Lagerling, Mercari U.S. CEO, stated that the new shopping assistant marks an exciting turning point in the evolution of secondhand shopping, utilizing the transformative power of artificial intelligence to make shopping and exploring Mercari’s extensive marketplace easier for Americans. Customers can log on to Mercari’s website and engage in natural conversation with the assistant, which asks questions to better understand their preferences and needs. Once enough information is gathered, Merchat AI populates a series of recommendations that customers can click on to purchase items or request more options. . (CISION PR Newswire)

Some potential uses for Merchat AI include finding unique gifts, searching for affordable trendy items, locating specific sold-out items, styling for different occasions, and discovering home decor items. However, as Merchat AI is still in beta, there may be some inaccuracies and inconsistencies in conversations and search results. Mercari plans to continuously update and improve Merchat AI based on user feedback and interactions. With over 50 million downloads and 350,000 new listings every day, Mercari aims to empower the next generation to transform the way they shop.
