The new technology will find application in “Mitsubishi Electric’s AI Creates the State-of-the-ART” (Maisart) in technology.

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (TYO: 6503) has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) technology that identifies individuals captured with multiple surveillance cameras in one-tenth the time taken by conventional AI by applying a special compression technology that eliminates superfluous data. It therefore is able to deliver very efficient and accurate re-identification, tracking and searching of the subject.

The process is also unaffected by cameras at different angles or if the subject changes poses to avoid detection.

How it works

Mitsubishi uses sophisticated compression technology and by discarding unnecessary details, compresses the usable data for re-identification to a tenth of conventional data sets.

The AI analyzes correlations between multiple features and then removes unnecessary data while retaining a person’s salient features. As a result, the AI now has the most essential features of the person from their image, drawn from the several thousand features that are possible to extract by an AI.

This selective extraction reduces the time for reidentification of the subject to a tenth of the normal time.

When images stream in from different cameras, the AI now compares the features using different camera angles to calculate similarities and determine if other images are those of the same person.

The AI also improves on its tracking and searching accuracy by cutting out the influence of different poses and angles, so much so that even if the person is wearing a mask or clothing similar to those of other persons nearby reidentificationis possible.
