Japan is likely to embrace OpenAI technology such as ChatGPT provided security concerns are resolved.

Japan is considering the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) technology for government use, such as the ChatGPT chatbot from OpenAI, according to Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno. However, the government is only willing to consider such technology if privacy and cybersecurity concerns can be resolved. (CNBC)

This statement was made prior to a visit by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to Japan, during which he expressed his intention to “build something great for Japanese people” and improve the ChatGPT model for the Japanese language and culture.

Matsuno was asked about Italy’s temporary ban on ChatGPT, and he said that Japan knew of other countries’ actions.

Matsuno stated that Japan would continue to evaluate the possibility of introducing AI to reduce the workload of government workers. However, they would first need to assess how to handle problem situations such as data breaches.

OpenAI has taken measures to address privacy concerns in response to Italy’s clampdown on ChatGPT, which led other European countries to mull the same kind of steps. In a blog post titled “Our approach to AI safety,” OpenAI stated that it was developing “nuanced policies against behavior that represents a genuine risk to people.”

During the meeting with Kishida in Tokyo, Altman reportedly discussed the benefits of AI technology and how to mitigate the risks associated with it. He also expressed his desire to open an office in Japan. If Japan does adopt AI technology for government use, it could lead to increased efficiency and productivity.

However, it is essential to address the issues relating to privacy and cybersecurity to ensure that citizens’ data is protected.
