FinTech: Payments Platform Thunes Lands $60M Series C
Thunes, founded in 2016, aims to solve the problems of global inefficiencies in moving money internationally.
Thunes, a global B2B payment infrastructure platform, has achieved significant growth milestones and secured a successful Series C funding round, surpassing $60 million. Led by Marshall Wace, a London-based hedge fund, with support from Bessemer Venture Partners and Southeast Asian private equity firm 01Fintech, the funding will support Thunes’ vision of creating a next-generation payment system that enables instant, quick, and secure cross-border transactions.
Thunes, founded in 2016, aims to address the inefficiencies in global money movement. The company seeks to provide businesses and individuals with access to high-speed and efficient cross-border money transfer, similar to sending a text message. Thunes has already connected 3 billion wallet users, representing almost half of the world’s population. (Thunes)
With the support of current and new investors, Thunes plans to scale its capabilities, introduce new solutions, expand into strategic markets like China, Latin America, and the Middle East, and enhance the robustness and efficiency of its network. Thunes has quadrupled the reach of its mobile wallet network to 3 billion accounts and now connects 4 billion bank accounts globally. The company has processed around $50 billion in transactions since its inception, with 90% of transactions being instant.
Thunes has established itself as a key player in the global payments ecosystem, thanks to its advanced technology and partnerships with industry leaders like Visa, PayPal, Uber Eats, and Finastra. The company has also expanded its senior leadership team with experienced industry veterans.
In addition to its growth and funding, Thunes has made strategic acquisitions, including the European payment methods platform Limonetik and AI-driven Anti-Money Laundering and Compliance technology leader Tookitaki. The company has also formed partnerships with Tencent Financial Technology, enabling fast payments to WeChat users, and D360 Bank in Saudi Arabia, facilitating cross-border remittances and B2B payments.
Thunes’ recent achievements include obtaining a Payments Institution license in France, allowing it to send payments worldwide on behalf of its French or EU customers and partners. These developments position Thunes as a leading force in revolutionizing global payments and driving financial empowerment through seamless cross-border transactions.
