“We need to adapt as a society for it,” Pichai said in an interview.

Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL) CEO Sundar Pichai has warned society is not prepared for the rapid advancements of artificial intelligence (AI), which will impact “every product of every company.” In an interview with CBS’ “60 Minutes,” Pichai added that AI regulation should not be solely the decision of companies. Laws should instead be created that “align with human values including morality,” and the development of AI should involve “social scientists, ethicists, philosophers, and so on.”

Pichai also warned of the consequences of the scale of disinformation and fake news that AI could generate. He also predicted that AI would disrupt a wide range of “knowledge” jobs including writers, accountants, architects, even software engineers.

Concerns have been raised over the rapid progress of AI and the training of “experiments” connected to large language models that are “more powerful than GPT-4.” More than 25,000 people have signed a letter calling for an immediate pause in such training.

While Pichai stated that society is not prepared for AI, he remained optimistic, highlighting the number of people who have begun worrying about the implications of AI.

The interview showcased several Google AI products, including the newly launched chatbot, Bard.

Bard generated a tale with characters and plot that it invented, leaving interviewer Scott Pelley “speechless” at the “humanity at super human speed.”

Pelley was further surprised when Bard replied that it helped people because it made it happy.

Despite concerns raised over the lack of understanding about how chatbots operate, Pichai responded that humans also do not fully understand how their minds work.

Google has already launched a document outlining “recommendations for regulating AI.”
