Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority, they wrote.

Prominent computer scientists and tech CEOs have issued a warning about the potential “risk of extinction” posed by artificial intelligence (AI). They stress the importance of addressing this risk globally, alongside other major societal risks such as pandemics and nuclear war.

The Center for AI Safety, a San Francisco-based research and advocacy group, issued the aforesaid statement on Tuesday. (ALJAZEERA)

The warning follows an open letter signed by Elon Musk and others earlier this year, which called for a six-month pause on the development of AI more advanced than OpenAI’s GPT-4.

Concerns about the negative consequences of AI, including job losses, misinformation, and loss of control, have been increasing. While current AI has not achieved artificial general intelligence (AGI), recent advancements have shown glimpses of AGI capabilities.

Experts are advocating for regulations and oversight of AI technology, and efforts are underway in various countries, such as the US, the European Union, and China, to develop legislation to address these concerns.
