The AI Summit, from September 13 – 15, 2022, gathers the most prominent policy makers, leading investors, thought leaders and innovators in the field today.

On Tuesday, September 13, the Global AI Summit opened in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with more than 200 speakers from 90 countries and 10,000 participants in the three-day event. Hosted by the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), the summit would be attended by private sector leaders, government officials, and renowned academic professionals from across the globe. Patronised by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the theme of the summit is “Artificial Intelligence for the Good of Humanity.” The event is taking place at the King Abdul Aziz International Conference Center in Riyadh.

The summit opened with a live presentation titled “Humans Can Have a Better Future with the Use of AI” that dwelt on the ethics of AI, the story of humans with AI and machine learning, the methods of teaching machines and other aspects of artificial intelligence.

“During the G20 in 2020, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia drove global consensus towards the OECD principles of trustworthy AI. How AI must be inclusive, human-centered, transparent, robust, and with accountability,” said H.E. Dr. Abdullah Alswaha, Minister of Communications and Information Technology in Saudi Arabia in a statement. “We cannot afford for algorithms to be biased or sexist. We cannot afford to not have the right data sets and the right context.”

Saudi Arabia also announced on the opening day its AI Ethics Principles, a framework to serve as a practical guide for incorporating AI ethics through system development. The Principles have been designed by SDAIA and are based on global and domestic standards.

SDAIA President Dr. Abdullah bin Sharaf Al-Ghamdi said in his welcome speech: “We are about to reach the inherent capabilities of AI, where early signs are very promising; where vertical farms that work today through AI tools can produce food with a production capacity of more than 400 folds of what conventional farms can produce; where AI has proven its ability to reduce carbon emission by 40% and that it can predict some cancer types in a better way than humans.”

A series of announcements will be made at the Summit, all aimed at advancing the use of data to solve some of world’s biggest challenges in areas such as healthcare, energy, and sustainability.
