Alternative Investments: The Ford Mustang Steve McQueen Drove in Bullitt Could Fetch A Record Price
The revered 1968 classic car was driven by the “King of Cool” Steve McQueen in Bullitt.
Remember grim-faced, dogged Steve McQueen chasing a couple of goons up and down the streets of San Francisco in that iconic car chase in Bullitt? The car McQueen drove in that chase, a green 1968 Ford Mustang, is up for auction at Mecum and may command a record price of as much as $4 million for Sean Kiernan, its owner.
According to Fox Business, Sean Kiernan’s father, Bob, acquired the Mustang for a mere $3,500. It seems, Steve McQueen, himself tracked down Bob Kiernan and offered to buy up the Mustang. The car is a piece of automobile movie history.
However, Bob never got back to McQueen on the offer.
The Mustang is a rare specimen with 98% of it intact
According to the New York Times, Kevin Marti, an employee of classic car insurer Hagerty, said after inspecting the Mustang: “98% of the original car is there. It’s an incredible artifact.”
Dailyalts.com wrote about this car in August last year. MBCSN will telecast the auction live on January 10. Strangely, Kiernan is offering the 1968 green Ford Mustang without a reserve auction price.
According to Dana Mecum, Mecum’s founder and president, the car could get bids as high as $3 million. McKeel Hagerty, CEO of Hagerty the insurer, feels the car could go for as much as $4 million. “There is still a very active portion of collector-car culture that thinks of Steve McQueen as the ultimate car guy,” Hagerty spokesman Jonathan Klinger told the Times. “The King of Cool.”
For some perspective, in 2012, auctioneers R M Sotheby’s sold a 1968 Ford GT40 used by Steve McQueen as a camera car in the 1971 movie “LeMans” for $11 million.
