However, Apple is yet to decide its strategy on marketing the model to consumers.

Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) is reportedly working on its own large language model (LLM) similar to ChatGPT, referred to internally as “Apple GPT.” The company’s motivation behind developing this model is to avoid falling behind competitors in the AI landscape. These rivals include OpenAI and Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL).

While Apple already employs AI and machine learning for various services, it aims to create a generative AI tool with functionalities akin to ChatGPT, and has named the LLM framework “Ajax.” Ajax is said to be built on top of Google’s machine learning framework, Jax, and has been in development since last year to unify Apple’s machine learning efforts. Additionally, Apple is said to have a chatbot, though its availability is limited even within the company.

There is uncertainty about whether Apple will make its Apple GPT model publicly available, but potential announcements may be made in the coming year. Currently, Apple prohibits its employees from using publicly available LLM models to safeguard sensitive data.

The company’s CEO, Tim Cook, has acknowledged the promise of LLM models but called for thorough training to avoid bias and misinformation.

Cook is also known to support the idea of both self and government regulations in the AI space to ensure ethical decisions and appropriate usage.
