Artificial Intelligence: Echoing The Destruction From The Atom Bomb, Director Chris Nolan Warns On AI
Oppenheimer, the film, is set to release later this week.
Noted film director Christopher Nolan, who was speaking after a screening of his documentary “Oppenheimer” at The Whitby Hotel in New York, has issued a warning to technology companies and engineers in Silicon Valley. Nolan emphasized the importance of accountability in the realm of technological innovation.
He expressed concern about the lack of responsibility exhibited by companies in Silicon Valley, particularly regarding the use of algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI). Nolan highlighted the potential dangers of AI, particularly when it comes to its application in defense infrastructure and nuclear weapons. (Gadgets Now)
Notably, Nolan’s film takes its inspiration from “American Prometheus,” a biography written by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin in 2005. The book focuses on Julius Robert Oppenheimer, a physicist renowned for his significant involvement in the Manhattan Project and often referred to as the “father of the atomic bomb.” After the devastating impact of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Oppenheimer is widely believed to have regretted his contribution to the scientific breakthrough.
Nolan stressed the need to hold individuals accountable for their actions and called for a thoughtful consideration of the unintended consequences of technological advancements. His comments resonate with leading researchers in the AI field, who consider this period as their “Oppenheimer moment” and reflect on the responsibilities associated with developing new technologies.
Referring to AI, Nolan warned of its destructive potential: “Terrifying. Not least because as AI systems go into the defense infrastructure, ultimately they’ll be charged with nuclear weapons and if we allow people to say that that’s a separate entity from the person’s whose wielding, programming, putting AI into use, then we’re doomed.”
